Why Dubai taxis need rebranding: Call me maybe?

Dubai taxis are becoming more and more infamous for their unreliable service. Are we alone in this?

You’re pacing back and forth, fidgeting and repeatedly glancing at your mobile screen. You’re nervous and desperately hoping to hear it ring but it never does. Chances are you’ve mistakenly relied on the services of a taxi in Dubai.

Initially, the customer service attendant mentioned that, at most, the taxi would arrive in 20 minutes. It’s now been 55 and you’ve started to mentally rehearse an elaborate excuse as to why you are late for work.

If you’ve ever stood for an hour or even two on the street, frantically waving at every seemingly available taxi you can find – only to have them wave you off and drive past, then you’re a victim of utterly unreliable transport services.

If you’ve ever made plans to wake up earlier than your body would normally allow you to – in hopes that you would beat the rush and catch the worm – only to again find that it made absolutely no difference; then it is time to speak up.

Not to sound holier-than-thou and yes you may brush this off as a petty ‘first-world’ problem but the fact of the matter is there are thousands of daily commuters that rely almost entirely on the punctuality, professionalism, safety and availability of taxi cars in the Emirate. What they find instead is disappointment in all four areas and beyond.

This Kipper endures a minimum of two taxi rides a day and has done so for years. I am truthfully unable to recall a single pleasant or safe experience with a taxi driver here. Perhaps I have just been unlucky.

“Stop whining, Kipp, as long as it gets you from A to B” you might say but the fact is: it’s a lot more than that. More often than not, I walk out with a sore foot – having spent the entire journey pummeling it into my imaginary brakes and holding on for dear life.

I am certain we are not alone in this so Kipp suggests a fun little game.

Together, let us unofficially rebrand Taxis in Dubai based on their professionalism, safety, reliability and general service. We also urge you to send us your opinions, insights and personal experiences with your daily commute as well. Whether they were spectacular or nightmarish we still want to hear from you.

As for the rebranding; ‘Take a chance taxi’, ‘Call me maybe Taxi’ and ‘Might not show-up at all Taxi’ are all perfectly adequate titles in Kipp’s book but we really want to see what YOU can come up with.

    Thanks for making me smile. Now can you please let me know when was last time you felt you had a good service? Telecom? Dewa? dealing with developers? or maybe banks? every time I need to go to one of these places I just start to stress. I know I will need a good nap after to recover. I cannot concentrate in my work before. Go through all the papers needed (as things change overnight); call them 3 times to make sure if where I am supposed to go is the right place, confirm documents needed, even that is going through hell as you waste 20 minutes struggling with a machine who ends up directing you to the wrong place. 2 visits minimum and 2 days lost to be able to solve the smallest issue in Dubai. A lot of improvement in customer services. But humans get used to everything… even to bad service at inflated rates

    have you tried ordering for your cab in advance? (like the night before). you obviously know your work schedule so why not place an order the night before! thats what i do when i want to leave for the airport. and they have always always been on time. smelly!! but on time!

    Come on! I guess you are too harsh on them. Taxis offer certainly better service than most other industries here. Been using them for 5 years…. really cannot re-colllect any harrowing experience for last 4 years at least. 2007 was bad when cabbies wont even stop most of the times, calling did not help and at many instances I waited for more than an hour… only to call my friend to rescue me at the end.

    I’ve been living in Dubai for less than a year, as i don’t drive i’ve been depending on taxis almost each time i need to go somewhere. Finding a cab is generally not a big problem, but i’m almost praying each time i can find one who knows how to drive and respects other drivers on the road as well as pedestrians. Driving is an approximate skill in Dubai, but if a driver puts me in ridiculously dangerous situation by changing lanes or going backward because he missed the exit, i’d rather walk.
