Super Bowl, the most celebrated American sport, is not only much awaited for its final play-off but for the million-dollar ad campaigns that serve as fillers in between touchdowns.
And Super Bowl 46 (alright, XLVI for you few fanatics out there) is no exception.
So Kipp took a look at the ads aired during the Super Bowl 2012 and sifted through them all, so you won’t have to. It’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it.
While watching over 50 Super Bowl ads—mostly of cars—may have reduced us to cliché overdose, we are now in a better position to present to you the top 10 of noteworthy Super Bowl Ads.
Super Bowl, amounts to big business in the States: reports suggest the time slot this year cost an average of $3.5 million and reached an estimated 117 million viewers—that is a lot of pressure to get it right. We shan’t give it away-have a look at these ads and let Kipp know what you think.
Chevy Sonic “Stunt Anthem”
Kipp can remember the days when we struggled to grasp the meaning of personification as a young school Kipper. We feel certain, just watching this Chevy ad would have helped put us straight. Chevy does an excellent job personifying the new Sonic as the adventure-loving thrill seeking companion you’ve always wanted by your side.
M&M’S “Just My Shell” Super Bowl Commercial
Introducing a new MnM character, Kipp absolutely loves this topical and quirky MnM ad-that uses LMFAO’s ‘I am sexy and I know it’ to get a few laughs.
CareerBuilder 2012 Big Game Commercial – Business Travel
A whimsical and rather funny approach for a recruitment company. Reminds us a tad of Dunstan Checks in, though.
Toyota Camry 2012 It’s Reinvented
Is it necessarily a good thing that Toyota claims to ‘reinvent’ a whole bunch of impossible feats before they tell you they have reinvented the Camry? Kipp’s no Ad Man, but we have a hunch the answer to that question is probably no-yet points for a creative Wes Anderson-esque narrative.
Coke 2012 Commercial: “Superstition”
Got to trust Coca Cola to feature non-humans loving their fizzy product. But unlike the awful-connotations-insects-love-Coca-Cola ad, this ad of a superstitious Polar Bear strikes all the right chords for Kipp. S
“Transactions” – 2012 Acura NSX
Trust Jerry Seinfeld to get a few laughs with his classic ‘Jerry’ quips and moans. Kipp especially loves the reference to Jerry Seinfeld’s nemesis ‘Newman’ at the end of the ad.
David Beckham Bodywear for H&M Super Bowl Ad
Smoulder, smoulder, pout and pose-here’s David Beckham promoting his tight-y whities- by wearing one flexing and rotating all at once.
Camry Effect: “Connections” :60 Big Game Commercial
Going for sentimentality but ending up a tad bit too long and tiring, Kipp gives this Camry add brownie points for intentions.
Hulu Plus Super Bowl Teaser Ad #mushymush
Described as a terribly expensive hash tag, though we are fans of Will Arnett and Arrested Development, Kipp this Hulu ad was a bit of a hit and miss-mainly owing to the insider jokes which could alienate or amuse one.
“Think Fast”: Hyundai Genesis Coupe
Restarting a man’s heart vis-a-vise a powerful car engine is a morbid idea-but was the direction Hyundai chose to take this Superbowl. Kipp wasn’t too charmed by the reference to the corpse-but points for the notion.
Chevy Silverado “2012″
Chevy’s post apolyptic doomsday humor failed to bring a smile to Kipp’s face. All we ended up wondering why the company chose to spend the final deciding moments of the ad drawing the viewer’s attention to the Twinkies?
