A look at Jumeirah

A look at Jumeirah

We’ll tell you one thing: Very little rhymes with it. Kipp takes a look at the latest news coming out of Dubai’s hospitality giant, the Jumeirah Group.

Kipp is a big fan of Jumeirah. The Dubai-based hospitality giant knows how to run a hotel, which is why we were struck by a recently announced plan to cut jobs. But if you’ve been following the news, that’s not even half of the story; here’s a closer look at the numerous headlines coming from the Jumeirah direction in the last few months:

Recruitment at Jumeirah

First the good news: At the start of this week, Jumeriah Group hosted an open day to recruit staff for the newly opened Zabeel Saray hotel. A company spokesman told Emirates 24|7 there will be 1,100 employees managing the new property. Staff were sought to run F&B service, housekeeping, engineering, technicians and spa operations, among other positions the group was looking to fill.

Getting Leaner

Weirdly, then followed some less positive news: The group reportedly underwent considerable resizing last year when it laid off staff across the company, including those in senior sales, marketing and development as well as those in hotel positions; now a new round of redundancies has been announced. Strange, given that it’s at a time when the company is both heading an impressive international expansion drive as well as recruiting locally. Industry experts shed light on the matter, saying the move represents the group’s attempt to get leaner in light of its expansion.

“Jumeirah Group is reorganising its corporate structure to be better aligned with changing market dynamics. In view of its international expansion, Jumeirah is putting in place a regional structure, which unfortunately involves a number of job losses in group and corporate position,” said the company, as reported in the National.
