The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) begins today (December 11), and its organizers are hoping the event will be a huge success. But AbdulHamid Juma, the chairman of the festival, is facing a more challenging ‘reality-based’ drama right now.

In 2007, the former CEO of the DIFF, Neil Stephenson, filed a $5 million lawsuit against Juma and the event’s managing director, Shivani Pandya, claiming that they tried to ‘marginalize him, damage his reputation and oust him from his post’.

A Los Angeles judge dismissed the case in November last year, citing jurisdictional issues. But Neil Stephenson filed a new appeal in the UK High Court of Justice on December 2. DIFF has clarified that the lawsuit is baseless.

Juma became the chairman of DIFF in 2006. He is also the deputy director general of Tecom. Some of his previous positions include CEO of Media City, and positions at the Jebel Ali Free Zone, Dubai Internet City and Citibank.

DIFF attracts several big names from the movie industry every year, and Juma has met several stars including George Clooney, Sharon Stone and Bollywood actor…
