In November this year, in a sudden move, al-Tayer was appointed as governor of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), replacing Omar bin Sulaiman, who has been heading the centre since its establishment in 2004.
“We are here to establish an international financial center for the UAE, to serve the region and to co-operate with other centers from Hong Kong to Frankfurt and London,” said al-Tayer, after taking over.
Touted as one of the most powerful bankers in the region, his portfolio is long – he is the chairman of Emirates NBD and Commercial Bank of Dubai, the vice chairman of the Dubai Aluminium Company (Dubal), a board member of the Investment Corporation of Dubai and deputy chairman of the Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc), among others.
Al-Tayer has also held positions in the government- he was UAE’s Minister of State for Finance and Industry from 1983 to 1997 and has also served the Minister of Communications.
He was appointed to his latest post by Dubai’s ruler…
