All that glitters…

Wondering what you’ll spend all that excess cash on when you hit the big time? Kipp explores the Midas touch with this mix of everything golden.

May 24, 2010 4:06 by

  • To commence our whirlwind tour of everything gold-plated, we begin – where else? – in Dubai.

Word reaches Kipp that the Burj Al Arab, the world's most expensive hotel, located in the glittering city of Dubai, is the only hotel in the world featuring gold-plated wallpaper in every room. We’ve yet to verify that (this is about as close as Kipp has gotten to the hotel) so if any Kipp readers can confirm or deny it please let us know.

  • Good news for the wealthy in the Gulf region: You can now grab a bar of gold on the go, from a hotel lobby in the United Arab Emirates – anytime, day or night.

The shiny machine, aptly-named "Gold to Go,” is the world’s first vending machine to dispense gold. And of course, this high-end contraption is a beauty all on its own – because you can’t dispense gold from any old machine, it’s dripping in lustrous gold-plated extravagance.

  • We stay in the UAE for the madness that is a gold-plated cars. Not only did the Dubai motor show cause quite a stir last year when it attached gold leaf to a Lexus LX 570, but rumor has it that a gold plated bio-fuel Mercedes is loose on the UAE streets. This one-of-a-kind extravagance is the reported indulgence of an unnamed Abu Dhabi billionaire.

The unique vehicle reportedly features a newly developed V10 quad turbo engine with 1,600 horsepower and 2800nm of torque. The exterior is plated in white gold.

  • How about this for a luxury gift: a delicate replica of the Kaaba in the Holy City of Mecca.

The model is plated with 24k of dazzling Gold, carefully crafted with attention to fine detail and workmanship.

  • Popular on special occasions throughout the Middle East, almonds are a special treat, especially at weddings. Traditionally, they are offered in the wedding favor to represent health, wealth, fertility, happiness and longevity.

And for the bride with everything, consider offering your guests these brilliant, gold-foiled Jordan almonds (Littlethingsfavors.com). They’re sure to add some dazzle to the candy dish.

  • If you think that The Middle East is the only place that goes crazy for gold... think again.

The world’s priciest solid gold toilet features a gold toilet paper dispenser, gold basin, and gold waste bin, and it is located in Hong Kong.
The entire washroom required 380 kg of pure gold and 6,200 gemstones worth an estimated $80 million.

  • Wazakura Koubou from Japan reportedly covered a computer keyboard with pure gold. And while it may sound mindlessly expensive, the price tag is a very reasonable, at just over $270.

Kipp’s bosses might like to know that it would feel particularly inspired with gold under the fingertips all day.

  • If you’re a die-hard coffee fan, you know the importance of the morning’s first cup. To add a touch of extravagance to that daily indulgence, consider “Impressa F9.”

This 24-Karat gold-plated automatic coffee center is a limited edition, with just 555 numbered units, available for around $2,700.
