In 2007, AMG started its new venture the Arabian Television Network (ATN), with the launch of MTV Arabia in November. Palestinian writer/producer Farid “Fredwreck” Nassar and Qusai Khidr, a hip-hop rapper from Jeddah, were some of the artists who entertained crowds during its launch.
Arabic versions of popular MTV music programs are the mainstay of the channel, which is the 52nd MTV outside the US. Hip HopNa, a regional music talent search program, is the flagship show. The 24-hour channel targets the young crowd in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon and the UAE.
MTV Arabia recently announced that it will stop playing music videos during Ramadan this year. But it will continue to play programs from MTV’s international roster of reality shows, celebrity news and pop culture documentaries.
