The launch of the inaugural Arab Social Media Awards was announced today (June 15) by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai.
At the launch, HH Sheikh Mohammed explained the reason for launching such an initiative in the region. “Social media influencers are important change-makers in society,” he notes. “Those who bring wisdom, creativity and positivity are a powerful force for good, because social media are powerful tools for development and progress.”
The award ceremony is organised as an annual event that will reward individuals, businesses and institutions that play an active role on social media by creating a space for innovation and creativity in the Arab world.
“The Arab world has not yet made the most of the enormously positive potential of social media,” HH adds. “This award will highlight successful examples in the area of social media and use them as a basis to maximise the benefits to society.”
The award categories include the following: Government Sector, Private Sector, Blogs, Media, Sport, Tolerance, CSR, Education, Youth, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Economy, Politics, Health, Arts, Safety, Security, Shopping, Environment, Tourism and Entertainment.
There will be a separate “Personality of the Year Award” for individuals who have contributed to create a better community through social networks.
“We want this prize to add real value to the existing efforts to develop all channels and sectors of the Arab media. By honouring online influencers, we stress the great value that an innovative and effective social media presence can bring,” concludes HH Sheikh Mohammed.
