Kipp’s importance rating: 7/10

Kipp likes food. Most people like food, in fact, and gastronomy is food as an art form. The winners of a prestigious Michelin star spend years perfecting their craft before they even come close, and the beauty of it is, once you’ve won one, it can be taken away. Which means retaining one is about reaching a pinnacle and staying there.

Michelin stars are awarded by the Michelin Guide, or more specifically the Michelin Red Guide. It’s the oldest and most famous hotel and restaurant guide in Europe, and has been around since the early 1900s, when the Michelin company (yes, the same one that makes tyres) produced it as a car and road trip guide. It became famous for its restaurant content, and the rest is history.

A three star rating from Michelin practically guarantees fame for the chef who holds it. As of late 2009, there were only 26 three-star restaurants in France, and only 81 in the world, according to Wikipedia.
