Tony the Tiger is an advertising mascot for Kellogg’s cereal, Frosties, otherwise known as Frosted Flakes. Tony was created by Graphic Artist, Eugene Kolkey during a contest to become the new official mascot of their new cereal in 1952. Competing against three finalists (Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant and Newt the Gnu), Kellogg’s thought Tony the Tiger was a great personality for their product. Humanised in the 1970’s, he was given an Italian-American background and a family. (Mama Tony, Mrs. Tony and a son and daughter named Tony Jr. and Antoinette). Creating these different personas helped in industry relate to their target audience easily and created more opportunities for them. Tony was a hit, becoming the most liked mascot on cereal boxes. As the years past, Tony Jr. had a chance to shine on his very own cereal box called “Frosted Rice”, later taking over the ‘family business’, becoming the new face of “Frosties” all together.
