The surrounding area around the Kaaba, the Mataf, is undergoing expansion to double the capacity of pilgrims from 48,000 to 105,000.
Expected to be completed in 2015, the expansion project will see the capacity in the other parts of the Grand Mosque rise to 2.5 million people.
According to the Saudi national chancel, the new project will preserve the heritage and construction style of the Grand Mosque.
Temporary efforts are under way to increase the capacity from 22,000 to 35,000 pilgrims in light of the huge number expected to arrive this Ramadan.
The work will be suspended during Ramadan and haj, but will resume afterward.
Saudi Arabia’s religious authorities have approved, earlier this month, a request by the government to reduce the number of pilgrims permitted at this year’s haj to allow expansion work at Mecca’s Grand Mosque.
