Another ‘world’s tallest building’ in Dubai?

The emirate of Dubai is never shy from breaking world records in, well pretty much everything. Now, the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) today announced its plans to build the world’s tallest commercial tower to cater to large multi-nationals.
The tower’s height or number of floors hasn’t yet been disclosed, but we know it has to surpass the current tallest commercial tower in the world, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan. It comprises 101 floors above ground and five floors underground, and stands 508 meters high. Prior to the launch of Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101 was the tallest building in the world.
The new commercial tower will be located in the Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT) free zone, part of a 107,000 square metre business park by DMCC. The concept for its design puts “more space for customers” ahead of everything else; therefore, the building’s architects and aesthetics will not be a priority, according to a DMCC spokesperson.
Due to the continuous disagreements over how to measure the height and classify structures, engineers are struggling to create clear definitions for categories of buildings and other structures, with some being already created. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, an organization that certifies buildings as the “World’s Tallest”, recognizes a building only if at least 50 per cent of its height is made up of floor plates containing habitable floor area.
Beside Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building – Dubai currently also has the world’s tallest residential building, the Princess Tower in Dubai Marina, standing at 414 meters high, and world’s tallest hotel, the JW Marquis on Sheikh Zayed Road, standing at 355 meters high.
Today, approximately 7,000 members from start-ups to multi-nationals operate from the DMCC Free Zone. Still, some may argue that this might not be the best time to launch such a project, with the global economy at a stand still and Dubai’s real estate sector is yet to fully recover from the 2009 economic crisis.
With 65 mixed-use commercial and residential towers and more than 180 retail outlets in operation, there are currently more than 65,000 people working and living within the JLT development. On average, DMCC welcomes over 200 companies per month to its Free Zone, more than six companies per day – over 90 per cent of which are new to Dubai, according to DMCC’s press release.
