Pope Benedict XVI is the 265th head of the Catholic Church and as such, Sovereign of the Vatican City State.

During his recent trip to the Middle East, he became the first Pope to step inside the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, considered the third holiest site in Islam. Some Arab Christians believe however, that his visit was overshadowed by the issues important to Jewish and Muslim relations, which alienated the Christian population.
