Divorce in the UAE
The divorce rate in the UAE has increased dramatically in the last few years, and is costing the government lots of money.

However, under Sharia law, if a man says, “I divorce thee” to his wife three times, it indicates a final separation. A man can also divorce his wife over the phone or in letter, after which they will have to approach the court to finalize the proceedings.
A woman may also be granted a divorce if she proves that her husband has been physically or mentally abusive, if he has abandoned her for a period of three months and/or he refuses to take care of her and their children.
She can also obtain a khula – a separation from her husband from the court, but will have to return the dowry to her husband and may even have to pay compensation depending on the court’s ruling.
