Dubai Metro update
With the launch of the Dubai Metro looming, news of the service’s progress has been flooding the media… and yes, not all the stations will be ready for the launch.

Recent media reports on the Dubai Metro launch on September 9 claim all 29 stations on the Red Line will not be part of the inaugural ‘phase 1′ of the service’s opening. Only nine or 10 out of the stations will be complete, Maktoob Business reported on Wednesday.
“Only nine or 10 stations will open in the first phase, but more than that will be ready by then,” a person familiar with the project told the news website.
“After that (the first phase) 10 stations are opening in October and the remaining in November,” he added.
The delay explains the RTA’s request to the Ministry of Labor for an exemption to the midday work ban. Arabian Business reportedly intercepted an email that claimed the ministry granted the RTA its request on condition that workers are provided with sufficient provisions, including rehydration salts and adequate ventilation.
The midday work ban is applicable from July 1 to August 31. It exempts laborers from working under the sun between 12.30pm to 3pm. Violators of the ban face being fined by the Minister of Labor.
However, the delay is not the only change. The names of two stations on the Red Line were changed recently: BurJuman Station was renamed Khalid bin Waleed Station, and the Dubai Aluminum Company Ltd (DUBAL) Station was renamed Energy Station, reported Gulf News on Wednesday.
With regards to the BurJuman Station, an unnamed official told the Dubai-based daily the two parties were unable to reach an agreed price: “The RTA persuaded the BurJuman Centre to buy the naming rights of the station but both the parties could not reach the deal which involved hefty amount,” he said.
In March 2008, the RTA invited corporations to bid for 23 out of the 47 stations on the Red and Green lines. Sponsorships were available for a minimum of 10 years at AED6 million per year, or AED60 million for the full term.
To date, only 10 out of the 23 stations have been branded.
