According to some retailers and food manufacturers, the month of Ramadan represents 12 to 20 percent of their annual sales.
Retail outlets across the UAE have launched numerous campaigns during Ramadan and Eid to attract shoppers. For instance, jeweler Damas has introduced a limited edition collection of 18 karat gold pendants adorned with diamonds and stones for Eid. A pendant costs AED1, 990, and it is designed to symbolize the spirit of Ramadan.
Marks and Spencer Al-Futtaim also introduced a limited edition of collection of clothes for Ramadan and Eid retail this year.
“During Ramadan, most people buy like people in Europe before Christmas,” Saleem Shaikh, the senior project manager of the Ramadan Fair in Sharjah told The National recently. “They feel it’s a tradition and culture to buy things during Ramadan and to give also. Giving gifts, its part of the culture.”
The fair, which began 15 years ago, is part of Sharjah’s Ramadan Festival and includes stalls from India, Pakistan, Iran and Singapore, and UAE. They sell a variety of products such as perfumes, cosmetics, jewelry and fashion.
“They are catering for Eid shoppers, all under one roof, so they can buy all their stuff,” Shaikh explained.
