In 1995 Morton spent around $80m to open the first Hard Rock Hotel and Casino at Las Vegas. Its success led to a further expansion in 1999, nearly doubling the hotel’s capacity. In addition to its Las Vegas operation, Hard Rock now operates casinos in England, Hollywood and Mississippi. It also has hotels and resorts in Chicago, New York, San Diego, Florida, Indonesia and Thailand, some of them as joint ventures. The company has also announced plans to build a hotel in Dubai, slated to open in 2011.
Last year, the Morgan’s Hotel Group bought the Hard Rock rights for Casinos and Hotels in half of the US, for $770m.
Earlier this year, the company opened a $400m Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Billed as the world’s first rock ‘n’ roll theme park, it has over 50 attractions and a live-music amphitheatre.
