In Pictures: Kipp’s Metro Retail Wish List

Careful what you wish for! On hearing that over 150 retail spots are available on the Green and Red line of the Dubai metro station, Kipp got to thinking what we would like to see…

  • When Kipp found out that the Rocky Real Estate has won the leasing rights for retail units in the Dubai Metro, we couldn’t help but fantasize about the various outlets we’d like to see at the stations. Apparently, there are over 150 retail spaces available for tenants across the green and the red lines. If you had to add to our wish list, what would you wish for?

  • This one is a no-brainer. Currently the metro boasts of nothing less than 150,000-odd people using it a day (a number that has surely multiplied exponentially since the launch of the green line). Given that the majority of these people travel during rush hour, you are talking about thousands of Dubaians with empty stomachs and tight time constraints. Put them together and offer commuters an opportunity to grab a quick yet healthy breakfast, lunch, tea-time or dinner. Currently, I have seen hungry commuters scarf down the stale doughnuts and frozen sandwiches available at Zoom outlets. Get an affordable and good shawarma stop or juice bar in there and you could be reaping the over abundant benefits.

  • After a tough and long day at work the thought of having an express spa that is ‘on-the-way’ is indeed a really tempting one. It’d be something like Phoebe Buffay’s (from F*R*I*E*N*D*S) idea of having a massage van, but less unstable. We know if we could get a quick neck and shoulder massage after one of ‘those’ days at work, we’d be on it faster than you can say ‘Relax.’

  • How many times have you realised only too late that you need to get a birthday card for a friend. Or how about picking up some flowers for the old lady on your wedding anniversary?

  • Sure the Zoom convenience stores offer a few magazines, but Kipp’s thinking of the glorified massive newsstands of the older days at major metro stops offering passengers a wide variety of newspapers, magazines and even books.

  • Ladies, wouldn’t it be excellent if you’d be able to get a ‘last-minute’ fix at the metro station? This might be a bit of a stretch, but what if you remembered you had an important engagement, you’d be able to get your eyebrows waxed and not waste as much time as trying to track a station down.

  • Because one always does seem to have problems with the telecos in the UAE, it’d be beyond helpful to have those outlets at stations to get your problem with the TV/internet/phone sorted.

  • We are thinking Boots...a place to pick up some over-the-counter meds or the other non-medical nifty things that have nothing to do with medication but somehow find their way to sterile pharmacies around the world.

  • We are sure the hoards of tourists that board the Dubai metro would find it very useful to get information as soon as they disembark.

  • Because everyone loves an automated photobooth to take embarrassing pictures. No just kidding, it would be great to have an opportunity to get a few of those passport-sized portraits done when you needed them.

  • You’d certainly have a much happier Kipper come into work if the metro station we frequently used had a trusty Espresso machine. A little bit of caffeine in the morning goes a long way, and should the major stations offer the morning rush traffic the opportunity to indulge in a little black goodness at the start of the day, they’d surely make their money and then some.
