Just a fortnight after the end of London Olympics, the Olympic stadium was all set for a spectacular 2012 Paralympics opening ceremony. Kipp presents to you the highlights of the ceremony.

  • Fireworks lit up the sky during the opening ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics Games in the Olympic stadium.

  • The opening ceremony kicked off with Rihanna’s hit number ‘Umbrella’; perfomers took to the floor holding umbrellas over their heads as foamy raindrops fell.

  • A glowing sphere descends into the stadium.

  • Professor Stephen Hawkings made a special appearance. He reminded us that we are all different, but it is our spirit which helps us rise above.

  • Queen Elizabeth II formally opened the games, with a message saying the nation looked forward to "celebrating the uplifting spirit which distinguishes the Paralympic Games from other events." 

  • The Queen was accompanied by her grandson, Prince William, his wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prime Minister David Cameron.

  • Artists performing during the opening ceremony  of the London 2012 Paralympics Games at the  Olympic stadium in east London.

  • Fireworks exploding over a gigantic statue of pregnant Alison Lapper.

  • The Paralympic flag is carried into the stadium and hoisted into the air.

  • Marharet Maughan, who won Britain's first gold medal at the inaugural Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960, lit the cauldron marking the beginning of the London 2012 Paralympics Games.

  • The Paralympic cauldron brightly lit up.
