In pictures: Top 10 safest airlines

Two UAE airlines make the list, says JACDEC. Etihad and Emirates have landed in the top 10 of the Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre’s (JAIDEC) second annual Airline Safety Ranking. The organization uses metrics such as launch of operations, years since last hull loss and recorded accidents.

  • 10. Qantas: Qantas is the flag carrier in Australia and was founded in 1920 and claiming that they are the second oldest operational airline in the world. The airline received an index of 0.013 on this year’s Airline Safety Ranking.

  • 9. Air Canada: The second flag carrier of the list, Air Canada has been operational since 1965. Based on their report titled, Air Canada – Our Fleet, the airline has the 8th largest fleet, globally. Their index was 0.012.

  • 8. Etihad Airways: The UAE’s flag carrier that was only founded in 2003 has received international recognition for vicious growth since its inception.  The airline received an index of 0.012.

  • 7. TAP Portugal: The completely state owned Portuguese airline was has been around since 1945 and is naturally, the country’s national airline. The airline also received an index of 0.012.

  • 6. British Airways: Yet another flag carrier makes the list in 6th place. The airline was launched in 1974 and is currently one of the largest airlines by fleet with 285 airplanes. They also fly to over 180 destinations across the world. BA received an index ranking of 0.011.

  • 5. Eva Air: The Taiwanese airline has been operational for the past 25 years and has a fleet size of 69 aircrafts. Eva Air received a ranking of 0.010.

  • 4. Emirates: The Dubai-based airline is the second UAE carrier on the list of safest airlines across the world. Emirates commenced operations in 1985 and have a large fleet size of 211 aircrafts. The airline received a 0.010 index rank.

  • 3. Finnair: Finland’s largest airline, Finnair is also the nation’s flag carrier. It is also an older airline, launched in 1923. Finnair also received a ranking of 0.010.

  • 2. Cathay Pacific: Landing in second place Cathay Pacific receives an index rank of 0.008 a relatively large jump ahead of its competitors.  The Hong Kong based airline has been operational since 1946 and provides passenger and cargo services.

  • 1. Air New Zealand: Taking first place as the world’s safest airline this year, is Air New Zealand – the nation’s flag carrier and has been operational since 1965. While their operations may be on a smaller scale, it is apparent that it matters little. The airline received an index ranking of 0.007.
