  • Though it has been open for more than a month, this weekend was the “grand opening” of Ferrari World. And boy was it grand. A brilliant spectacle of fireworks, acrobatics and opera, the grand opening titled 'Power meets Elegance' was officially imaugrated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.  Ahmed Al Sayegh, Chairman of Aldar Properties said, "Aldar's work with Ferrari was a meeting of minds with a clear vision to create an experience that is unique, fun and inspirational. We are extremely proud at Aldar to be able to contribute to this vision."

  • Ferrari World, which was officially opened with a spectacular show this weekend, is home to the fastest roller coaster in the world. Though the Formula Rossa, (the fastest coaster) did have some teething problems, it has received rave reviews by the thrill-seeker passengers who have ridden it.

  • The UAE celebrated its 39th National Day on Thursday; in complete UAE-style not a single surface that came in the way of the celebrations was left spared from the stickers, tinsel, flags and face paint. Cars, like the one featured in this picture from Flikr, were adorned with ‘39’ and flags.

  • Traditional dances, parades and performances were the center of attraction at the Abu Dhabi Corniche.

  • National Day fireworks reflected in the corniche in Sharjah

  • Dark horse Qatar’s victory has caused many skeptics to eat their words as the country gets used to the fact it will be hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

  • Some say the reasons Qatar won the bid to host the World Cup was because of the emphasis on sustainability in its proposal. Apparently Qatar is to build solar paneled stadia that they will disassemble and ship to developing nations post world Cup.

  • We got this great shot from the Australia vs. Russia match in the HSBC Sevens World Series 2010 from Faizan Jamal on Flikr.

  • Another action shot, this time of the match between England and Portugal during the Dubai Rugby Sevens from Faizan Jamal on Flikr. England were stunned by Portugal in the group stages, but recovered to win the whole tournament in a thrilling final against Samoa.
