“If your search is for absolute paradise, this could be it,” says the sale detail for this breathtaking beauty. Wow, that’s some claim, but looking at the images, they could well be right. Situated on the Glover’s Atoll, about 60 miles from Belize City, this island was formerly a resort catering for divers seeking the world’s best diving location, and apparently the Atoll fits the description. That resort has since shut down, but a caretaker looks after the island and apparently all infrastructure remains and could easily be revived.
According to the sales details: “Yachts frequent the Glover's Atoll on their way between Guatemala and the rest of the Caribbean. They'll often moor overnight within the protection and pristine waters of the Atoll. If your search is for absolute paradise…” Well, you know the rest.
Manta Caye is going for a very reasonable $5.8 million. See Caribbeanislandbrokers.com for more information.
OK, so in terms of climate, British Columbia may not answer the description of sub-tropical paradise. But for some, who enjoy a little greenery and pure, bracing air, this could be a tiny slice of heaven on earth. The sale site calls it “a tree-covered, 5.26 acre gem,” and looking at the photos, they’re right.
Scott Island offers its own modern, 4,541 square foot two level home with five bedrooms, six bathrooms. And if you’re worried about looking after the place, fear not: There’s self-contained, 1,644 square feet caretaker’s wing with two bedrooms of its own.
According to the sales patter, “Arbutus, maple, fir, oak, pine, and juniper blanket the island’s rocky outcrops. Scott Island is brimming with outdoor activity options from playing the full-size tennis court, hiking and bird watching on land to kayaking, swimming, diving, fishing, and crabbing in the waters offshore. One of the island’s unique perks is its large and protected all-weather and all-tide harbor, rendering boating a breeze.”
The cost? Yours for just under $5 million. See Privateislandsmag.com for more details.
How about something a little more… Latin American? This little gem in Angra dos Reis Bay in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has four houses in total: the Main House (319 sqm; 4 fully furnished bedrooms with baths and walk-in closets), Honeymoon House (80 sqm), Belvedere House (220 sqm, 3 stories) and the caretakers' house (82 sqm). All are built in the Portuguese Colonial style. The whole island has a fortress-like appearance thanks to the 12 cannons and six watchtowers spread around.
The island includes a marina for at least 3 large boats, jet-skis and dock master office, and a tram, 138 meters long with new cables, recently serviced and renovated. Water and power supply and telephone lines come from the mainland through underwater cables.
On sale for a mere $8 million, you can find more details at Vladi-private-islands.de.
Yes, another North American bolt hole, this one more about the house than the island. And compared to Scott Island, it’s a little more “civilized,” as Kipp’s old dad would have put it. The turn-of-the-century house also boasts a country kitchen, impressively equipped pantry, four furnished porches, and a grand dining room that seats up to 16 with 12 generous windows offering ever-changing views of the seaway and sunsets. Ten bedrooms sleep a maximum of 20 people. Magnificent Victorian detailing, such as wood paneling and a grand staircase, features throughout, says the sales patter. The house is also air-conditioned and centrally heated and all four baths have claw-foot soaking tubs or showers. A deep-water boathouse and extensive docking facilities accommodate a number of craft.
The island sits in a peaceful bay with views of ships, sunsets, Thousand Island bridge and the Rock Island Lighthouse. The patter: “Spend lazy days on-island curled up in a nook or grill the day’s catch on the outdoor grill or barbecue. Paddle the periphery of the island in the property’s canoe or pedal past quaint, century-old gingerbread houses and grand, old hotels onshore on one of the island’s two bicycles. While away long summer evenings in the screened porch watching river life pass by and lights begin to glow on shore.”
A snip at just under $2 million. If that’s out of your budget, don’t panic – it’s available to rent, too. See Privateislandsmag.com.
Let’s stop mucking about with these pitiful little $5 million hovels. Do you want to buy an island, or do you want to buy an ISLAND? Caye Chapel is a full blown island resort built to be an ultimate private retreat.
Measuring 265 acres, this island is a business proposition more than a personal space. It contains eight beachfront villas and 11 marina-view casitas, and in 2002 opened as a destination resort specifically for those seeking the ultimate in seclusion, personal safety and a luxurious lifestyle. The marketing for the island as a tourist destination has been strictly word of mouth, keeping its clientele to a minimum. Which presumably helps keep the 18-hole championship golf course fairly quiet. There’s also a paved private air strip, a deep water marina for yachts up to 140 feet, and two miles of beaches. And that doesn’t have to be the end of it’ according to the sales info: “There is potential to expand the present development into a large-scale commercial resort operation or high-end boutique enclave as the majority of the north end of the island is completely undeveloped.”
Yours for $75 million, see Caribbeanislandbrokers.com for more info.
We saved our favorite for last. After all, who hasn’t secretly coveted their very own Bond-villain’s lair? This incredible island could be our chance. This 43 acre isle is circled by sparkling beaches in the Sir Frances Drake Channel, an area renowned for its boating and fishing.
That Bond-esque building is a modern (2006) villa perched on the island’s southern cliff, boasting 360 degrees of the area and surrounding islands. There’s also an infinity pool, a marina, and a 1.37 acre plot on the mainland complete with two bedroom house and gate house (for when you want to spend a little time on the mainland, you see?
From the sales spiel (as if it’s needed): “There are few places in the world that can only be described as pure luxury – welcome to Buck Island, one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful private island estates.”
On the market for a cool $50 million, if that’s out of your reach you could rent it. See Privateislandsmag.com.
