It’s a relaunch

Yahoo! has relaunched its portal this week, in the hopes that it’ll increase its visitor numbers and attract more advertisers.

Yahoo! has a lot of money riding on its improved portal. Recently it launched an $100 million global advertising campaign brandishing the phrase “It’s Y!ou”. The campaign will focus on 10 key markets, the bulk of which are emerging markets: United States, United Kingdom, India, France, Brazil, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Canada. Riley believes “the next billion people are coming online” from emerging markets.
Although the improved portal boasts an enhanced interface, it does not incorporate Microsoft’s technology.
In July 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo! signed a deal allowing Yahoo!’s websites to use Microsoft’s search technology and search advertising, and putting Yahoo! in charge of managing banner advertising for both corporations. However, the deal is awaiting regulatory approval.
In August, it acquired Maktoob.com, the Arab world’s largest online portal, as part of its strategy to tap into emerging markets. The deal marked Yahoo!’s first foray into the region. The global internet giant already boasts over 20 million users in the Middle East; however, it hopes to penetrate the market further with an Arabic service.
Yahoo! is struggling to boost its profits worldwide. It posted revenues of $1.57 billion in the second quarter of 2009, but made only $141 million profit.
