While most schools have closed down this week because of Eid, parents have kept their children out of school due to the spread of swine flu in the region. The scare has also prompted some GCC nations to postpone the first day of school. A number of countries have shut down schools as a precautionary measure.
The UAE’s education ministry has urged parents not to panic: “Parents have no right to confirm H1N1 infections without knowing the facts right. It is the job of the Ministry of Health to examine suspected cases and keep a record,” Humaid Mohammad Obaid Al Qutami, Minister of Education, told Gulf News last week. “Schools are keeping the ministry informed as and when there are cases of infections in schools.”
However, parents don’t seem satisfied; according to our poll, the maximum number of respondents – 34 percent – said that they were unsure about sending their kids to school this month because they were unhappy with the measures taken by the schools in the region.
