Lenovo fires 6 shots into Middle East smartphone market

In the midst of canapés and interpretive dance, six new Android phones were unveiled today in Dubai, with the flagship K900 soon to hit shelves in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Lenovo’s new suite of smartphones is apparently apt for ‘top-end users, stylish trendsetters, professionals and the conscious spender’. It seems like that would cover just about everyone. Screen sizes range from 4” to 5.5” and all devices are dual SIM, aside from the K900. Priced around $530, the leader of the pack is kitted with a 13MP camera, a Sony Exmor sensor and full IPS HD display.

“The UAE and Saudi Arabia are strategic markets for Lenovo where smartphone penetration is the highest in the world,” said Oliver Ebel, Lenovo MEA’s VP and General Manager.

“Our goal is to be one of the top five smartphone vendors in both countries in the near future. We believe this a reality as our product range caters to a wide variety of individual needs and we have partnered with the best in the industry to help us achieve our goal.”

Gianfranco Lanci, Lenovo EMEA President explained Lenovo’s ambition to lead the PC+ era: “Smartphones are fast becoming a primary platform for work, entertainment and social networking for consumers and we are thrilled to be launching our exciting line-up today in UAE and Saudi Arabia, second wave of Lenovo’s smartphone expansion in EMEA after Russia last year.”

1)K900 – for tech-savvy power users

2) P780 – for professionals who demand lasting battery, USB on-the-go & business apps

3) S920 and S820 –  for heavy multimedia users

4) A706 and A390 – affordable but ‘fully loaded’

Across the range, Lenovo engineers and designers are said to have focused on keeping the new phone lightweight. Most of the devices run on quad-core processors. Lenovo has also introduced design innovations to improve key aspects of the smartphones such as longer battery life, display size and super camera application.

In Saudi Arabia, Al-Haddad Group will distribute the smartphones to independent retailers and will also offer the portfolio at its 120 Al-Haddad and Kube stores across the Kingdom.  Lenovo has also signed on Jarir Bookstores and Extra as direct partners in Saudi Arabia.


In 2012 the Beijing-headquartered technology giant became the world’s second PC vendor by units sold and became China’s number two smartphone player within just 18 months in the business. It now markets its ThinkPad notebooks and ThinkCentre desktops in 160 countries.

Despite it being Lenovo’s first foray into the shark tank that is the MEA smartphone market, the firm expects to shift 50 million units in FY13/14.
