With a recent report classifying one-third of the UAE’s residents as clinically obese, and swarms of residents from the emirates and Qatar being admitted into hospitals for overeating in Ramadan, a new campaign has been launched in the nick of time.
For the next thirty days, as part of the month-long ‘Your Weight in Gold’ initiative by Dubai Municipality, Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group and Dubai Multi Commodities Centre Authority (DMCC), Dubai residents can, quite literally, cash in their excess pounds in exchange for gold.
The rules are simple: you must actually have excess weight to lose, commit only to healthy weight-loss methods, and lose a minimum of two kilograms by August 16 to qualify.
The top three ‘losers’ will each receive a gold coin worth AED20, 000 – donated by the DMCC – but if you’ve successfully shed two kilograms, you’ll receive two grams of gold.
There is no official limit on how much gold will be given away to contestants, so according to Hussain Lootah, Dubai Municipality’s director general, “the more you lose the more you gain”.
All participants must register with an Emirates ID card. Contestants will be weighed at one of the registration desks at gate three of Zabeel Park, the main gate of Khawaneej jogging track, gate four of Safa Park, the starting point of Mamzar Beach’s jogging track, or the main gate of Al Barsha Pond Park, between 8pm and midnight starting this Friday.
It’s not very often that we come across such a powerful incentive to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. In fact, for DMCC executive chairman, Ahmed Sultan bin Sulayem, the motive behind donating AED100, 000 worth of gold coins was rather personal.
After suffering from an injury in the past, he struggled with his own weight and thus, hopes that it will motivate people to improve and sustain a healthy lifestyle.
