According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, murder is defined as “the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought.” The Compact Oxford English Dictionary defines murder as “the unlawful premeditated killing of one person by another” (noun) and “kill unlawfully and with premeditation” (verb).

This means, unintentional killing, such as a driver killing another in a road accident, is not usually referred to as murder.

The murder of a political or religious leader is usually termed as an assassination. Merriam-Webster defines assassination as “to murder (a usually prominent person) by sudden or secret attack often for political reasons.”
