The 49-year-old singer was born in Michigan, and arrived in New York with “$35 in [her] pocket” in 1978. She worked at Dunkin’ Donuts in Times Square, and as a figure model for artists.
In the late ’70s, Madonna along with singer Dan Gilroy and his guitarist brother Ed, formed a band called The Breakfast Club. She later went solo, and released her self-titled debut album in 1983, which had hits like “Holiday,” “Burning Up,” “Lucky Star” and “Borderline.”
