Qatar’s Future Landmarks

Looking at Doha’s major architectural and infrastructural ongoing plans is akin to remembering Dubai’s ambitions 10 years ago; an exercise both in nostalgia and awe.

  • Earlier this week Qatar awarded the South Korean construction firm Hyundai Engineering & Construction the final contract from the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) to build the Qatar National Museum. The $434 million new museum will be set up on a 1.5 million square-foot site with 430,000 square-foot of indoor space; the construction of the project is estimated to span over 33 months. Pretty impressive stuff, right? Well, that is what Kipp was thinking and so for this week’s installment of In Pictures, we thought we’d have a look at some of Doha’s most promising up and coming projects.

  • Due to open in 2012, the New Doha International Airport will cover a land area in excess of 22km² and will handle around 50 million passengers, 2 million tonnes of cargo, and 320,000 aircraft landings and takeoffs each year. But that is not it, as a considerable portion of the development will include a free trade zone, offices, hotels and retail malls.

  • This $3.2 billion project will include the construction of a central plaza, an 11-storey hotel, 639 villas, a seven-storey apartment building, 88,000m² of retail space and 291,000m² of parking. Al Wa’ab City Development will include mixed-use residential and apartment units housing around 8000 people, anchor, and low-rise office space. At the center of the development is a 44,000m² yard which will double over as a central urban gathering space for tourists, guests and residents of the city.

  • This $5.5 billion project by Lusail Real Estate Development Company is not yet complete. Well it isn't going to be completely complete in a long time. The entire development is estimated to be completed by 2018. So what exactly is Lusail? It is a "a new coastal city" that will expand for 35km² and will contain 18 different districts includinga lagoon with two marinas, 25,000 residential units, high and low-rise buildings, commercial districts and mixed-use areas, retail areas, two golf courses, 22 schools, and a hospital.

  • About a month ago Qatar Railways Company (QRail) invited local and international companies to the bidding process for building the Doha Metro. Though there is no value yet given for the project,a company official said in June the total cost of the railway project, with 100 stations, would reach 130 billion riyals (Dh131.1 billion).

  • This $5 billion being developed by the United Development Company when completed will accommodate more than 40,000 residents. Pearl Qatar will comprised of the following districts: Abraj Quartiers, Costa Malaz, Porto Arabia, Viva Bahriyah, The Villas, Floresta Gardens, and Isola Dana. In addition to three 5-star luxury hotels, Pearl Qatar will be home to four marinas and retail space.

  • This $3 billion Qatar - Bahrain causeway project calls for the design and construction of a 40km two-lane dual carriageway between Qatar and Bahrain. The road will run across a total of 18km of embankments and 22km of viaducts and bridges over deep water, including two 400m cable-stayed bridges over shipping channels.

  • Phase One of this Higher Committee for the Coordination and Pursuance Executive Council's $7 billion project is set to be completed in 2014; the entire project deadline looms somewhere closer to 2023. The port will cover an area of 20km² and will include the construction of five general cargo terminals and berths, four container terminals and berths, a roll-on/roll-off berth, an administration and customs complex as well as a berthing area for tugs and pilot boats.
