With controversies and millionaires, reality TV has managed to capture audiences across the world.

“Reality television is a genre of television programming that presents purportedly unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and usually features ordinary people instead of professional actors,” says Wikipedia.

The genre has grown tremendously over the last decade, and “real people” compete against each other for anything and everything, including money, love and talent.

However, despite its rising popularity, reality TV has also come under fire for being scripted and not “real.”

“Perhaps only cockeyed optimists believe reality shows are completely on the up-and-up; then again, maybe it’s just the most suspicious conspiracy theorists that believe every detail is as meticulously planned as an episode of “CSI,” says a recent report aired on MNSBC.

“Certainly, reality TV is a very manipulated format where the basis of it is that real people are put into unreal situations to create a story,” J. Rupert Thompson, a director and producer told the channel. “As soon as they get into an unreal situation, one could argue that it’s scripted, because the situation is created by the producers. What makes it so compelling is that you never know what a real person’s reaction to an unreal situation will be. That’s why you get such great stuff on reality TV.”
