Reality shows across the world have come under fire for various reasons; in 2007, The Big Donor Show, a Dutch reality show following a terminally ill woman who had to choose a contestant for one of her kidneys, came under severe fire. One doctor told the BBC that the program was “ethically totally unacceptable.” However, the show was later revealed to be hoax.

The American reality TV show Kid Nation, which placed 40 children aged 8 to 15 in an abandoned New Mexico ghost town to fend for themselves for 40 days, was also criticized. It even urged New Mexico officials to investigate whether the show violated state laws on child labor and child abuse.

In 2004, Arabic TV channel MBC was forced to suspend its version of the reality TV show, Big Brother, after it led to widespread protests in Bahrain, where it was being filmed.

“I have watched the show and it must be stopped,” Shahnaz Rabi’i, one of the organizers of the demonstration told BBC at the time. “Our religion has strong values which say boys and girls should not mix together,” she said. “This program is a threat to Islam. This is entertainment for animals.”
