As a UAE resident, how often do you use the words ‘responsible’, ‘effective’ or ‘strategic’ when describing yourself professionally or to a potential employer on your online profiles?

You might indeed be all of those things, but does that necessarily mean that you should rely on cliché terms to differentiate yourself?

According to LinkedIn, which has recently released its annual list of buzzwords, those three words top the list of being the most overused in the UAE members’ profiles for 2013.

Responsible turned out to be the most overused buzzword on LinkedIn profiles globally as well.

LinkedIn, which currently has more than ten million members from the Mena region, has released a complete 2013 list of the top ten words that appear the most in the profiles of more than one million LinkedIn members in the UAE:

1. Responsible

2. Effective

3. Strategic

4. Organisational

5. Creative

6. Dynamic

7. Analytical

8. Competitive

9. Innovative

10. Expert

This is the fourth year that LinkedIn has released its annual list of overused buzzwords. Looking back at the past few years, a variety of buzzwords have risen and fallen in terms of their popularity.

In 2010, ‘extensive experience’ was the top buzzword worldwide and in both 2011 and 2012 the top buzzword was ‘creative’.“Our annual buzzwords list demonstrates how UAE professionals are yet to fully utilise the LinkedIn platform to its maximum potential,” says Ali Matar, spokesperson for LinkedIn MENA, who adds that users should differentiate themselves by incorporating presentations, videos or photos to demonstrate their strengths, rather than relying on commonly used words.
