Rethinking the call to kill Mickey Mouse

Saudi’s King Abdullah has said that several individuals have to be stopped from issuing “chaotic and whimsical fatwas.” So, is Mickey Mouse safe?

A fatwa on marriage came from Rashad Hassan Khalil, former dean of Islamic law at al-Azhar University in Cairo in 2006. He said that for married couples, “being completely naked during the act of coitus annuls the marriage.”

After an uproar, Abdullah Megawar, the fatwa committee chairman at al-Azhar , tried to appease the situation by saying that while a husband and wife could see one other naked, they should not look at each other’s genitals. And they should probably have sex under a blanket, he added.

In 2007, Ezzat Atiya, a lecturer from the same university came up with a solution for the belief that unmarried men and women should not work alone together. He said that if a woman were to breast-feed her male colleague five times, the two could safely be alone together. “A woman at work can take off the veil or reveal her hair in front of someone whom she breast-fed,” he said.

He was reportedly suspended from the university for his view, and he later admitted that it was a “bad interpretation of a particular case.”
