The 68-year-old has been the president of Costa Rica since May 2006. This is his second term in the office; he served as the country’s president from 1986–1990. During his first term, in 1987, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to bring about peace in the Central American region.
Arias first entered politics in 1970 as an assistant to Jose Figueres, a former president who was again seeking election. When Figueres was elected president in 1972, Arias was appointed minister of planning. He went on to occupy several posts in the government before becoming president.
