Ridiculous Valentine’s Day gifts

Got a rose? A red teddy bear? Feel rather special, don’t you? Well let’s see how you feel after looking through Kipp’s list of the most ridiculous V-Day gifts.

  • V-Day or D-Day: no matter how you look at it the day is ripe with unmet expectations – whether you are the giver of a predictable bouquet and chocolates or the receiver of a predictable bouquet and chocolates. And even if you upped your game this year, because the media love to report on the larger than life gifts millionaire and celebrities receive and give, nothing you do will ever be enough. You know that, right? How’s that for the day of love? Well because Kipp is such a fan of Valentine’s Day, and we love to make you squirm in inadequacy, we present to you some of the most ridiculously expensive gifts given on Valentine’s day. We hope your sweetheart is reading!

  • We will start the count down with a double whammy: In 2009, not only did gazillionaire Raj Kundra gift Shilpa Shetty a heart-shaped diamond ring on Valentine’s Day, but he also handed her keys to a £5.5 million seven-bedroom mansion in Weybrdge, England.

  • Apparently last year, Angelina Jolie bought Brad Pitt a 200-year-old olive tree for Valentine’s Day. The olive tree was planted at their estate in the south of France. Hey, we didn’t say this was a list of most desirable gifts- the only way Kipp can rationalize this, is as a Hollywood version of extending an olive branch.

  • Four years ago the BBC reported on lawyer Maurizio Morelli who flew in award-winning Glasgow restaurateur Domenico Crolla from Scotland to Italy to  prepare a £2,150 (3,000-euro) feast for and his wife Sabrina in Rome on Valentine’s Day. The chef was flown to make his signature Pizza Royale 007, which is topped with edible gold, lobster marinated in the finest cognac , champagne-soaked caviar, Scottish smoked salmon and venison. Sounds awful, but each to their own.

  • Did your Valentine bring you a bottle of wine for your Valentine dinner? Thought him rather thoughtful, did you? Well how does that compare to this super duper gesture from David Beckham: apparently in 2008 David Beckham gave his wife Victoria Beckham a Napa Valley Vineyard which cost him a fortune (into the seven figures). An usual gift, but when compared to Angelina’s odd olive tree, a vineyard seems rather romantic.

  • Though they may no longer be a couple, last year George Clooney spoilt girlfriend Sarah Larson with a romantic night in a $40,000 hotel suite. The couple spent a night at the Hugh Hefner Sky Villa in Las Vegas's Playboy Tower at the Palms Casino Resort. What did they do there? Well, apart from the obvious, they also enjoyed dinner at the Nove restaurant and watched the Cirque Du Soleil tribute show to the Beatles at the Mirage Hotel and Casino.

  • Getting your boyfriend a car for Valentine’s Day, heck, for any day, is a gesture that will always be well received. And that is exactly what pop star Katy Perry did last year, when she bought actor Russell Brand a lilac-colored Bentley Brooklands. Not to throw numbers around, but apparently the rough estimate for a 2009 model is something in the $300,000 range.

  • They may no longer be a couple, but Courtney Cox is said to have once gifted her then husband David Arquette a carousel horse for Valentine’s Day. Slightly odd, but charming in a quirky sort of way.

  • Ok, we don’t really know whether an engagement gift counts a Valentine’s gift; essentially it is something you would have had to have given your fiancé at some point of your engagement. But because this particularly rock was so loud, we thought it deserved special attention. Sirius radio megastar Howard Stern gave girlfriend Beth Ostrosky a 5.2 carat emerald-cut engagement ring valued at over $250,000 on Valentine's Day 2007.
