The 64-year-old was elected as the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations in 2006, and took office on January 1, 2007. Previously, he served as Korea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. During his tenure with the ministry, he had postings in New Delhi, Washington and Vienna, and was responsible for many portfolios, including foreign policy adviser to the president, deputy minister for Policy Planning and director-general of American Affairs.

Some of the main issues that he has campaigned for during his term include the Middle East peace process, the conflict in Darfur, and global warming, for which he constantly pressed the ex-US president…
