Kingdom Tower, Jeddah
The building that was instrumental in placing Dubai on the world map as the fastest growing city in the world, the Burj Khalifa, will hold the title for the tallest building in the world until 2017 – only!
The title will then be claimed by a megastructure that will be known as the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, and will dwarf our Burj Khalifa by over 172 meters. The tower’s architects, Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill (who also designed the Burj Khalifa), said that the tower “evokes a bundle of leaves shooting up from the ground – a burst of new life that heralds more growth all around it.”
The building is intended to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy, especially the real estate sector as the sheer presence of the building in the city would dramatically increase the present value of other properties around it – but news of the building has been received with mixed reviews.
The Kingdom Tower’s construction is funded by the Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who struck a $1.2 billion deal with the Saudi Bin Laden Group, the tower’s main contractor and partner.
Prince Awaleed envisioned the construction of the tower and even selected the scheme of construction currently under design.
