The fourteenth prime Minister of India, Singh may not be holding the post for much longer. The nation’s general elections are underway and the poll results will be out on May 16. Manmohan Singh, who is part of the Congress party, is standing for re-election, but is facing opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Singh, primarily an economist, previously worked on the faculty at Punjab University and the Delhi School of Economics. He also worked briefly with the UNCTAD Secretariat and was appointed Secretary General of the South Commission in Geneva between 1987 and 1990.

He first joined the Indian government in 1971 as economic advisor in the Commerce Ministry. He later became the deputy chairman of the Planning Commission; governor of the Reserve Bank of India; advisor of the Prime Minister; chairman of the University Grants Commission; and the Indian Finance Minister.
