Roger Federer has just pulled out of both the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships scheduled to be held next week and Switzerland’s Davis Cup series against the United States tennis team next month because of a back problem.

“As a precautionary measure, I will use the next few weeks to make sure the back injury is fully rehabilitated and I am ready for the rest of the 2009 season,” he said.

Federer’s absence is the latest blow for the Dubai Championships, after the UAE refused to grant a visa to Israeli player Shahar Peer, citing security concerns, says the Los Angeles Times.

The former world number one has a strong link with Dubai; he has owned a home in the city since 2005 (a penthouse at the La Reve tower in Dubai Marina), is planning to launch Jura, a coffee machine maker this week, and last year, was photographed in the city for a piece in Men’s Vogue by….
