Mohammed Alabbar

Alabbar, who has been at the helm of Emaar Properties since its inception in 1997, has a vast portfolio of responsibilities. He is director general of the Department of Economic Development, a member of the Dubai Executive Council and chairman of the Bahrain-based Al Salam Bank.

The eldest of 12 children, Alabbar grew up in a palm frond shack in Dubai as his father was a dhow captain, according to BusinessWeek magazine. A graduate of the Seattle University in the US, the man has overseen construction of the world’s tallest tower, the $1.5 billion Burj Khalifa, since its inception five years ago.

Alabbar is of the most powerful and prominent business leaders from the region, and works closely with Dubai’s ruler…
