3. New Year’s Eve 2010
In another case that gained prominence this year, a 23-year-old British woman was arrested for having illegal sex with her fiancé after she went to register a rape charge in Dubai. However, the couple managed to escape a possible six-year jail term by producing a marriage certificate. The woman’s claim that she was raped by a waiter on New Year’s Eve at The Address hotel in Dubai Marina was also dropped, after the police said that there was no evidence of the crime.
However, the couple has been charged with consuming alcohol without a permit, for which they could receive a fine.
4. Sally Antia
In June last year, Sally Antia, a British expatriate in Dubai, and her boyfriend Mark Hawkins, also a British national, were sentenced to two months in jail followed by deportation, after Antia’s husband, Vincent Antia, complained to the local police that she was having an affair. Antia and her boyfriend Mark Hawkins, who flew in from Britain to spend a week with her, were arrested on May 2 while leaving the Radisson SAS hotel in Deira.
“I did ask to withdraw my complaint on May 3 but was told that the government wished to proceed with the case and it was out of my hands,” her husband later said in a statement.
