Shahrukh Khan vs. Salman Khan

Bollywood superstars Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan have both been partying it up in Dubai this weekend; how will they fare when we put them head-to-head?

It seems to Kipp that every role featuring Shahrukh Khan falls along the lines of the lovable boy next door who, a hopeless romantic, needs to overcome life threatening obstacles A, B and C to be with the girl of his dreams for the rest of his life (which he always manages). Tiring and predictable though he may be, Kipp has to admit King Khan has his stuttering “Ka-ka-Kiran” Casanova act down to an art and this is precisely the reason why the masses flock to the cinema for his latest blockbusters.

Looking back at Salman Khan’s work, Kipp sees a couple of blockbusters amongst a series of flops. It suggests a not too successful career, but it is also a sign of the diverse roles and movie genres Salman’s tried his hand at over the years. Though not always hitting the mark with his film choices, Salman Khan has surely grown over the years as an actor. For trying hard to reinvent himself in an industry that loves stereotypes, Salman gets our point for this one.

Does goody-two-shoes best define SRK’s reputation over the years? Sure, there’s his life-long, not to mention very public, animosity with fellow actor Aamir Khan. And yes, there is also his contentious relationship with director Karan Johar(who never seems to direct a film sans SRK) but other than that Kipp’s just a little bored with SRK’s squeaky clean rep.

No stranger to prison for engaging in some pretty illicit activities (from poaching endangered deer to being involved in an alleged hit-and-run), Salman Khan is as entertaining off screen as he is on screen, forever gracing the covers of tabloids around India. Known as Bollywood’s “super-brat” by Indian media, his bursts of angry tantrums and drunken fits haven’t always worked in his favor, but they have definitely kept Kipp entertained.

True to the role of the star-crossed lovers he generally plays in his movies, SRK’s personal love-story is just as heartwarming (yes, at times even Kipp is a sucker for happy endings). Coming from a Muslim family, getting married to Hindu Gauri Chibber was as big of an issue as it was a statement. A good twenty years, celebrating both Diwali and Eid with their two children, Gauri-Shah Rukh’s marriage is a wonderful model for inter-religious modern Indian couples everywhere.

It is tough to find a word to describe Salman’s love life, but Kipp thinks tumultuous probably sums it up the best. In the past, Bollywood’s most obnoxious lover-boy has been linked to several leading Indian actresses, but his controversial relationship with Bollywood queen Aishwariya Rai-Bachchan has gotten him the most amount flak after allegations that she suffered from physical and emotional abuse through-out their relationship emerged.

Dance

Ordinarily Kipp would never include dance in a brand to brand of two actors, but who are we kidding? This is Bollywood and an actor’s ability to hit those pelvic thrust are just as important as their ability to deliver heart-felt (albeit melodramatic) monologues...but unfortunately neither Khan is getting our vote for this one. The two come from a pre-Hrithik Roshan Bollywood when much wasn’t expected out of male actors in the looks and dancing department.

Try as hard as we can, the image of Salman Khan swinging his arms in the very particular gorilla-like-fashion unique to Salman alone, dancing shirtless crooning “Oh-Oh-Janney-Janna” is unfortunately permanently imprinted in our minds. He may have slightly improved since, but Kipp can never forgive Salman for his earlier dancing (or something like it) faux-pas.

Looks

Though not good looking in the classic Bollywood-handsome sense of aesthetics, there is something charming about SRK’s twinkling eyes, dimples and his clumsy smile that he has seemed to retain over the years.

If you prefer steroid-induced-buffed-up-gorilla-esque-armed men you are probably going to disagree with Kipp on this one. We think Salman’s best days were when he first joined the industry in the ‘80’s, when his body still resembled human proportions. But it has all been downhill since. And what with recent rumors of Salman nipping down to Dubai for a little cosmetic surgery on the puffyness that is the bags under his eyes, we are certain we’ve made no mistake by giving this one to SRK.

Awards

Shahrukh Khan’s many 'wins' wins him a point on this one. Amongst his many accolades he has to boast of the Aspara Award for Best Actor for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, won awards from the International Fim Academy for playing lead role in Chak De India,Veer-Zara, Devdas and won Filmfare awards for his work in Chak De India!, Swades: We the People, Devdas, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil To Pagal Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Ly Jayenge, Anjam and Bazzigar.

But don’t get us wrong, with over twenty years in the industry Salman Khan has received his fair share of awards too. Some of his achievements include Filmfare awards for Best Actor for Maine Pyar Kiya, Best Actor for Karan Arjun, Best Actor for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Best Comedian for Biwi No.1, Best Actor for Tere Naam and the Rajiv Gandhi Award for outstanding achievement in entertainment in 2007

This is a tough one to gauge even for Kipp. Undoubtedly India’s sweetheart, it isn’t surprising that Shahrukh Khan fans globally united for a fast before the star underwent surgery recently, with blogs carrying prayers and well wishes for the Bollywood superstar.

Everyone loves a bad-boy; despite his outrageously arrogant and law-breaking behavior ‘Sallu’ (as he is affectionately called by his fans) enjoys an impressively large fan base. Impressive because it seems no matter what Salman does wrong there will still be a considerable chunk of his fans claiming he is the victim of a conspiracy or bad press.

I agree with Kipp on this one (uh, finally), but wait, except the looks, Salman Khan looks much better than Sharukh, in recent poll Salman Khan placed as 7th most handsome guy in the world where Brad Pitt was leading the chart!
