As Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum has a global profile consummate with that of the leader of an emerging world power. Because – regardless of what is said of Dubai’s recent economic difficulties – it remains the financial capital of the region and a vital economic bridge between the declining west and the emerging east.
The Sheikh came to power in 2006, succeeding his elder brother (he is the third son of four). Educated mainly in Dubai, he also studied in England at Bell School of Languages in Cambridge. A major figure on the international horseracing scene, he is also noted for his vast charitable donations.
Dubai’s leader is widely credited with being the driving force behind the emirate’s rapid growth and development, and has been personally behind major projects such as the world famous Burj Al Arab hotel.
