Singapore

Sprawling shopping centers, a multi-ethnic population, and a whole island packed with tourist attractions…say hello to Singapore.

Since I travelled during the Eid al-Adha break, plane tickets to Singapore were expensive. The cheapest deal I found was on Qatar Airways for AED2,800. It included a stop in Doha airport, which is little like a cemetery, but given the prices I’d seen on Etihad Airways and Emirates, I was ready to make the sacrifice.
But before you book your ticket, check to see if you need a visa. If you’re like me and you need a visa for almost every country in the world, you’ll be happy to know that the process is painless. The Singapore Consulate in Dubai has outsourced its visa processing to three companies, one of which is the VSA Versatile Service Agency on Sheikh Zayed Road. It takes five to seven working days to process, and costs AED132.
As for Singapore’s rating on my livability index: it shoots right to the top, ahead of Kuala Lumpur and Dubai (and its dreaded debtors prison), although behind London and Rome.
