The “father of the euro,” Kohl called Europe’s unified currency a guarantor of peace for the continent. Widely considered the most successful German chancellor ever, Kohl is credited by many with the reunification of Germany. Former protégé to Kohl, Merkel rose to prominence in her party, spurred on by his tutelage and influence. In the end however, Merkel was instrumental in bringing about his demise. She was among the first to publicly distance herself from Kohl when it emerged that he had taken millions in undeclared donations for the CDU.
On the anniversary of his 80th birthday last month, Angela Merkel told the former German chancellor in a letter, “Your passionate personal commitment and your firm belief in a united, free future for Germany and Europe made you a pioneer of Germany’s peaceful reunification and one of the most important motors in European integration,”Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported.
