In an interview with Russian media last month, Mikhail Gorbachev, 79, called Kohl a “smart politician and an upright man.” He said they shared the common experience of having suffered family loss during World War II, contributing to their understanding and a shared vision for Europe. The Soviet Union’s last leader and recipient of the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize, Gorbachev worked closely with Kohl during the reunification of Germany, the event that signaled the collapse of the USSR.
In his acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize, Gorbachev said, “the year 1990 represents a turning point. It marks the end of the unnatural division of Europe. Germany has been reunited.”
In commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall last year, Merkel praised the former leader: “You courageously allowed things to happen, and that was much more than we could have expected.”
