Despite the Asian’s views, US President Obama was not deterred from seeking Yew’s counsel last year, just ahead of the president’s official state visit to Asia. Obama called the 86 year-old statesman a “legendary figure of Asia in the 20th and 21st centuries.”
“He is somebody who helped to trigger the Asian economic miracle,” the president added, noting that Singapore had been an important US ally for many years.
Lee, 86, said that he was privileged to visit Obama at a “time of renewal and change in America, and during a period of transition where the world order is changing.”
As a Harvard educated lawyer, it seems safe to assume that US president Obama is a strong proponent of America’s brand of democracy and individualism – in contrast with the aging statesman Yew.
