Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem

Former chairman of Dubai World Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem Sultan has a BS in Economics from Temple University in Philadelphia and an Honorary Doctorate from Middlesex University in Dubai.

The 56-year-old Emirati grew up close to the Maktoums, with his father being one of the ey advisors to the ruling family.

Bin Sulayem’s first job as a customs inspector was where he found inspiration to look at the ‘free-zone’ model, which he eventually proposed to Dubai’s then future ruler and family friend Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Kipp believes the words were: “If you really believe in it, you go run it.” Bin Sulayem was 30 years old then.

That conversation led to Bin Sulayem serving as the first chairman of the Dubai government’s tax-free Jebel Ali Free Zone when it was founded in 1985.

He later headed Nakheel, which took over Jumeirah Golf Estates in 2009. Construction for this project was halted until June this year, when the Dubai government announced it would fund its completion.
