Sony vs LG

It’s a battle of the biggies. Both are market leaders in electronic appliances whether, it’s phones or TVs. But which brand is more popular?

Would you rather buy a Sony Bravia TV or an LG LCD flat screen? If you go by the discussions on the web, it’s a tough choice. Unless, of course, you are a hard core fan of either.

History

Sony started out in 1946 in Japan as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Totsuko), but was christened Sony decades later. The name was created by combining “Sonus,” Latin for “Sonic,” meaning sound, with “Sonny,” denoting small size, or a youthful boy. According to the company, it was chosen for its simple pronunciation.

One of the company’s first products was an electrically heated cushion aimed at consumers for the winter months. It went on to build Japan’s first tape recorder and it’s first transistor radio. It also built the world’s first direct-view portable TV, CD player, and the home-use open-reel VTR.

LG entered the market slightly later in 1958 as Goldstar Company Ltd in Korea, and the name LG originated from Lucky Goldstar (which was its previous name). Like Sony, LG also boasts a number of ‘firsts’ — the company produced Korea’s first radio, its first electric fan, refrigerator, black and white television, air conditioner, washing machine and elevator.

More recently, LG claimed other accolades—the world’s fastest 3D game phone, world’s thinnest ceiling-bound system air conditioner, world’s thinnest LCD (1.48 mm) and the world’s slimmest (33-cm) flat-panel TV among others.

    Hi!

I think LG is winning the race although Sony has better haritage. But recently there have been a lot of rumors that Sony does not produce it’s own LCD TVs. They are buying it from some Korean company. If so then why do they still sell Sony TVs more expensive then the other brands? It is not fair.

    My vote is for LG…

I agree with ghazale… LG seems to be more involved in arab world also… I read about their sponsorship of Iraqi football team … which is a very good thing…

sony is definetely the leader, in terms of idea generation. but lg, samsung etc are catching up fast.

What I dislike most about Sony is that its products are exorbitantly priced!!! Brands like LG are now offering the same quality…

I am a true believer of Quality Products, since its birth in 1945, SONY focused on delivering exceptional products that changed the world wide conception of Japanese products. “Made in Japan” meant “Bad Quality” long time back, i do not think it is the case today.
Kenwood started almost the same period in Japan, who has a kenwood product at home these days??
Sony is the Leader in Japan and world wide and i think it is one of the most popular companies arround the world.
