The Business of FIFA

You may have already guessed this, but there is big money in the sport of football. Just ask FIFA, who turned over nearly $1 billion in 2009.

FIFA cashed in big on television broadcasting rights last year, posting just under $623 million in revenue from selling the rights to this year’s World Cup.
Europe paid the most for their television privileges, at over $354 million, with Asia and North Africa in second place, handing over $146 million. Lack of interest in North America and the Caribbean must have been telling, as they paid a meager $53 million for theirs.
Other FIFA events brought in lesser millions perhaps, but are still nothing to sneeze at. Broadcast rights for the grab bag of “other FIFA events,” like the World Cup Egypt 2009 and World Cup Nigeria 2009, still netted a hefty $27 million for the organization in 2009.
